As the name suggests, The Original Ghost Walk of York is believed to be the oldest ghost walk in the city of York, and possibly in the world. The provenance of the Ghostwalk.

WHY WAS YORK READY FOR A GHOSTWALK? 

As the number of attractions and therefore visitors increased in York, the numbers of visitors in York who wanted to know more about the cities history grew...

1963 York university opened

Castle museum was expanded in 1960’s to welcome more visitors. 

Significant Roman and Saxon remains discovered in 1970’s.

1975 National Railway Museum opened

1982 Yorkshire Farming Museum established.

1984 Fairfax House opened.

1986 Yorkshire Air Museum established.

Jorvik Viking Centre opened in 1984 following an important archaeological dig

York’s history was being showcased but as Peter Broadhead and Jon Mitchell embarked on their research, they discovered many stories of the supernatural and hauntings. They decided to make this the focus of their book ‘Ghosts of an Ancient City.’

It’s popularity encouraged them to turn this into a guided tour, occasional weekends. throughout the year.  The walk went from strength to strength to become a nightly event , eventually imitated throughout the UK and the world.

The first Ghostwalk started from The Black Swan, Peasholme Green. 

Public tours started from The Anglers Arm pub, Goodramgate.
Relocated 1985, to start from outside the Kings Arms, Kings Staith, where it has remained to this day.
A world famous pub befitting a world famous tour.

Still going strong having recently celebrated our 50 year anniversary...
